Our History

Himco Waste-Away is one of several companies owned by Waste-Away Group, Ltd. Charles Himes, Sr. formed the company in 1940 with a single truck. A lot has changed since then in terms of technology and innovation, but the values of the company and family stewardship have remained the same.

In 1966, the Himes family founded Himco Waste-Away Service, Inc. Himco was to be the commercial side of the blossoming waste hauling business. Quickly following its founding, Himco began offering commercial packer services to further expand the new commercial line of business. Over the next 50+ years, Himco would grow into the company we have become today.

In 1972, Himco began offering industrial roll-off service. This would move Himco from being a solely commercial waste hauler, and expand into the industrial/manufacturing markets. This expansion would become the standard for Himco services, as we grew and entered new local markets and counties.

In 1974, Waste-Away expanded again to found RecyclingWorks, Inc. RecyclingWorks would grow over the next 50 years to become the premiere recycling collection plant in Northern Indiana. Your Himco recycling is sent to RecyclingWorks for processing and our partnership has served to improve the services offered by Himco.

In 1990, Waste-Away added a customer support department. With the increase not only in serviced counties, but the breadth of offered services, it was time to offer a support framework for our customers. Today, Himco customer service boasts 15+ customer support representatives, locally housed in our Elkhart call center. When you call Himco, you’re working with your neighbors.

2006 saw the introduction of advanced GPS-monitoring systems into the Himco fleet. These technological advancements have allowed the Himco operations team to make on-the-fly changes to routes, and better help drivers navigate day-to-day changes. Overall, this GPS system has improved Himco’s responsiveness, added an additional level of consistency, and has made driver navigation much easier.
